Who are your eligible staff?

To help people save more for their retirement, the government now requires employers to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme. This applies to those employees who are not already in one and who:

  • earn over 10,000 a year (192 per week)
  • are aged 22 or over; and
  • are under State Pension Age

Under 22's if earn more than £112 per week but not more than £192 per week you have the right to opt in.

Staff will need to be written to and depending on their eligibility they will need different letters.

It is also worth considering what to do with new starters.

  • You can use a postponement period of up to three months before an eligible jobholder must be auto-enrolled.

This can benefit employers with a high staff turnover, as they will not have to auto-enrol jobholders who are likely to be employed for only a short time. Equally, postponement can be used to smooth auto-enrolment dates so that they align with existing payroll processes.

  • You may also wish to review your contracts so that staff are contracted to join your scheme.
