Bennett Verby supports women going back to work.
Employees at Accountants, Bennett Verby have donated over 10 large bags full of smart business clothes to local charity Smart Works.
Bennett Verby employees collected blouses, dresses, jackets, trousers and skirts.
The clothes were donated to Smart Works, a charity which provides clothes, styling advice and interview training to women who are out of work, on low incomes. The aim is to boost confidence and to help them succeed.
Smart Works has recently opened up an office on St Petersgate in Stockport, the first office outside London.
Adam Rhodes, Training Manager, at Bennett Verby organised the collection after he heard Laura Dalby, Manager of Smart Works talk to local businesses about the devastating impact that a recent break in had had on the new business. Much of their existing stock of clothes, bags and shoes had been damaged by vandals and was no longer wearable.
Adam immediately asked staff in the Stockport office to help and he was delighted with the response. Adam said: “Our team were really keen to help and the response we had was great. We are pleased to be able to support Smart Works and the valuable work that Laura and her team do.”
Laura added: “Smart Works is a charity that helps women on low incomes get a job and become financially independent. With extensive knowledge of the problems that these women face, we provide interview clothing and interview training, enabling them not only to feel more confident but to believe in their own ability to succeed and move on with their lives. Since we opened on 1st June, 66% of our clients have succeeded at getting a job within the first month of visiting Smart Works, so this is a programme that really works. And with the help of companies like Bennett Verby and their employees who have donated work appropriate clothing, shoes and accessories, we are able to continue dressing women to give them the best chance to succeed at their job interview.”
If you would like to support Smart Works Greater Manchester as a volunteer, as a corporate organisation, or if you have some clothing you would like to donate, then please get in touch email@example.com

New Year, new HMRC campaign targeting solicitors
Tax avoidance has made headlines throughout 2014 and at the start of the New Year, HMRC were quick to announce their next campaign to investigate solicitors.
Previous campaigns have targeted medical professionals, plumbers, electricians, on-line traders, landlords and health professionals. The government claims that these campaigns have to date raised over £1bn from voluntary disclosures.
HMRC is giving those solicitors who work in a partnership, company or for themselves a chance to come forward and tell them about any undeclared income.
Solicitors have until 9th March 2015 in which to tell HMRC that they would like to take part and until 9th June 2015 to disclose their undeclared income.
Previous campaigns have been successful as HMRC ensures that it has already thoroughly researched the sector it intends to target. Therefore if you have undeclared income the chances are that you are already in HMRCs sights.
For those solicitors, who have not declared all their income, it is important to register with the campaign by the 9th March 2015 and to then begin to put their financial affairs in order. Once registered solicitors will be expected to disclose their pay by 9th June 2015 and it is important to seek advice from an accountant or tax advisor as they can help you prepare and present your financial affairs to secure the best settlement terms.
Tax director, Nick Lowe says: ‘If you know that you have undeclared income it is much better to open up a dialogue with HMRC and put things right. Working together with your accountant or tax advisor enables you to present your case in the correct way and ensure that your tax affairs are in order moving forward.’
For those that come forward voluntarily HMRC has already said that the penalties will be less harsh: from spreading payments over a period rather than a lump sum to avoiding the publication of your identity and a criminal investigation.

We are also delighted to see that further funding will be made available to small businesses with growth potential, as well as those businesses that are looking to expand, by exporting to emerging markets.’’
For small high street shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants the extension of the Small Business Rate Relief will be most welcome as it can be one of their largest outgoings.
Additional increases in Research and Development tax relief for both small and large businesses will be of great benefit for those who continue to invest in new processes and products. The Bennett Verby tax team have worked with a number of clients, in manufacturing, IT, business services and the medical industry to secure more than £5million over the last 5 years.

Bennett Verby Payroll Services see organic growth
Bennett Verby Payroll Services have seen over a 30% increase in clients over the last 9 months as a result of organic growth at the practice and the introduction of RTI and Auto-enrolment.
Mel Esson, Payroll Manager at Bennett Verby believes that business owners are outsourcing their Payroll as it allows the business to be more efficient and save money.
‘There is no need to purchase additional payroll software or invest in additional time or staffing,’ said Mel Esson. ‘Our payroll team are highly skilled at what they do and we take the stress and administrative burden away from the business owner.
With RTI employers had to submit PAYE information to HMRC each time they paid their employees. Now with the introduction of Auto-enrolment employers will need to produce opt in and opt out reports, keep records of the contributions paid and when. Employers will need to assess new starters, as well as monitor the ages and earnings of their employees.
With Auto-Enrolment for companies with less than 250 employees now in progress, it has been predicted that between now and 2018, over 1 million companies will be staging.
Bernard Verby, CEO, commented, ’our Payroll Services are just one example of how Bennett Verby are enabling clients to respond to the new Pension Reforms. We have experts in Wealth Management that are providing guidance on pension schemes and we are encouraging business owners to use this opportunity review both their personal and business financial planning. Proposed changes to IHT and the new flexible pensions will have a positive impact on individuals however some business owners remain concerned about the financial implications of Auto-enrolment. We have found that we are able to reduce those concerns when working with them.’

Bennett Verby helps coffee pod duo become part of the crowd with funding deal
Accountants Bennett Verby has helped coffee pod duo – Grindsmith – become part of the crowd and secure funding to set up an eco-friendly coffee unit in the heart of Manchester.
Grindsmith, which is the brainchild of Peter Gibson and Luke Tomlinson, has raised around £10,000 from crowd funding – a new way for budding entrepreneurs to raise finance for their business ideas.
Together with a £15,000 start-up loan and £5,000 of their own cash, the pair are now serving freshly-brewed coffee from their eight-seater wooden coffee pod in Greengate Square
Pete, who runs an outdoor adventure business which operates mainly from March to October, met Luke at a high rope course.
Luke, who has a background in graphic design, already had a mobile coffee unit and Pete often ‘babysat’ the coffee machine while new dad Luke had his hands full with his baby. Two years later, the pair decided to move on to bigger and better things. Luke sold his wheels and the pair formed Grindsmith last November.
Their dream was to have an eco-friendly pod to provide a haven in the city for coffee lovers. They found a location that been developed by the council and set about raising funds.
Neil Jones, director at Bennett Verby, gave them lots of initial advice about finance and made sure that they checked all financial opportunities open to them included start up loans.
Pete said: ‘Neil gave us such great advice and all of accountancy work now goes through Bennett Verby’
The pair decided on crowd funding after financial planning/ forecasts showed them that their initial overheads would be very high if they just used a loan to finance the business. It would have taken six months to a year to have seen a gain.
The pair researched crowd funding and the ‘Kickstarter’ scheme seemed the best option.
Knowing they only had a 30-day window to promote their project to potential backers, Pete and Luke spent six months planning the content. They also backed other projects to experience what it was like to be a backer and to consider what to offer backers in return for their support.
Pete said: “We realised how crucial it was to get the video and wording format right. You only have 30 days to raise your target funds, if you don’t achieve your target you get nothing.
“After a slow start, the project gathered momentum in the last few days and in the end we got 89 backers mainly from the North West although we even got one from as far as Australia.”
Pete and Luke hit their £10,000 target and used the funds to buy the espresso machine as well as cups, saucers, food and drink display units and bar-brew equipment. The coffee pod recently opened for business.
Peter said: “Crowd funding was a way to protect the business. It enabled us to build up a following/ customer base right from the start with people wanting to come and experience the café because they had been supporting the business. We have even had a visit from an American lady - her father had seen their project on Kickstarter. “
He added : “Kickstarter has allowed us to re-invest early and expand the business. We have just confirmed a location for a coffee trike on Great Northern Square serving straight onto Deansgate. It will be a mobile unit but still with Grindsmith’s great coffee and Eco-ethos.”
Bennett Verby in exclusive partnership with award winning HR consultancy
Accountants and business advisors Bennett Verby has agreed an exclusive tie-up with a human resources consultancy.
Stockport-based Bennett Verby said the agreement with People Matters and its founder Niel Cope is designed to significantly expand and grow its human resources division as more businesses look to recruit and develop staff in the post-recession economy.
BV Human Resources currently provides a comprehensive range of employment law, health and safety and HR advice to around 100 SMEs and owner managed businesses across the North West.
In the past three months, client numbers have doubled as business owners look once again to invest in their companies and comply with auto enrolment requirements.
The tie-up with Bury-based People Matters – winner of the best loved HR consultancy in the UK in 2013 and 2014 – will enable directors to implement an effective HR strategy in order to develop existing staff and recruit and keep the right people to help grow their business.
Linda Saleh, who heads up BV Human Resources, said: “In a climate of greater confidence and optimism directors are reviewing their business structures and working with us across areas such as succession planning, recognition and reward structures, training and development to support growth.
“Businesses that are looking to recruit need to ensure that this is done effectively. For example, it is imperative that companies have an effective induction process as this if often key to new employees’ success and retention. Recruiting badly could cost your business £20k a year. Over five years that’s £100,000.
“We are also helping companies to comply with their auto-enrolment requirements as well as developing health care and other benefits which allow employers to reward their staff in an innovative way.
Linda added: “Niel brings a wealth of HR experience having worked in the public, voluntary and private sectors. He builds excellent relationships with clients by going the extra mile to create positive changes in their business. We are delighted to welcome him on board.”
Niel said “I'm delighted to be working with Bennett Verby. Our company’s share the same values of being fair, consistent and putting our clients and their people first. We are passionate about people management and this is a great opportunity to work closely with more businesses across the Greater Manchester area to promote and support them in managing and developing their people as we grow out of the recession together”.
Bennett Verby run 10k for the Wellspring
Accountants Bennett Verby are supporting local Stockport charity The Wellspring in this Sunday’s Bupa Great Manchester Run.
The 5 strong Bennett Verby team, all keen runners, are delighted to be running to raise funds for The Wellspring.
Accounts and Audit Manager Helen Cain says: ‘‘The Manchester 10k is a brilliant event. There is always such a positive atmosphere and great support for those running. The Wellspring raised over £25,000 last year and we are really pleased to be able to help with their fundraising efforts.’’
The Bennett Verby team have been in training over the last few months and are all aiming to complete the 10k course in under an hour. On Sunday they will join more than 300 runners, racing on behalf of Team Wellspring.
The charity, which receives no funding from the council or government, relies on the local community to support its vital work; from fundraising to volunteering and donations.
The Wellspring is open every day of the year to help people in the Stockport area. The needs of the people who visit the centre vary from simple ones: such as a hot meal, companionship, a hot shower or cloths, to more complicated needs: such as addressing problems like addiction, unemployment, homelessness, health or education requirements.
Nicola gets her insolvency licence
Accountants and business advisers Bennett Verby has added to the number of Licenced Insolvency practitioners in its Corporate Recovery and Insolvency division.
Nicola Baker, who joined the Stockport-based firm in 2010, has now obtained her insolvency licence after passing the Joint Insolvency Examination Board exams (JIEB).
Nicola's exam success coincides with Bennett Verby Corporate Recovery and Insolvency (BVCRI) relocating its Newcastle-under-Lyme office to new, larger premises as it continues to gain market share in the area.
Nicola began her career in 2005 at Tenon (now part of Baker Tilly) and in 2006 completed the CPI Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency.
After moving to Bennett Verby, she wanted to further develop her career and started working towards becoming a licenced insolvency practitioner.
Insolvency is a highly regulated industry and the JIEB exams are notoriously difficult - the pass rate is less than 50 per cent. It is also an industry where the majority of licenced practitioners are male.
Nicola joins Partner Vincent Simmons and Julie Bridgett as BVCRI’s third licenced insolvency practitioner.
Nicola said: “Passing the JIEB has allowed me to build on my technical knowledge and has also given me greater confidence.
“The industry is often overlooked in its role in helping businesses avoid insolvency in the first place, both through providing advice to individuals and businesses as well as instigating formal rescue procedures.”
Vincent added: “We are delighted that Nicola has got her licence which is thoroughly well deserved. It is exciting times for BVCRI with our move to larger premises in Newcastle-under-Lyme with our growing market share in the region.”
Bennett Verby helps aspiring entrepreneur acquire first business venture
Accountants Bennett Verby has helped an aspiring entrepreneur realise a lifelong dream of becoming her own boss with the acquisition of her first business venture.
When Bijal Rathour, who has a background in operational management, wanted a new challenge she quit her job and decided to undertake six months voluntary work as a care assistant.
Inspired by the work, Bijal decided she wanted to buy a successful care home. After researching available properties that had good Quality Care Commission (QCC) ratings, she acquired Bolton-based Astley Grange Nursing Home which has 26 bedrooms.
With the help of Bennett Verby Directors John Sutcliffe and Neil Jones, Bijal and business partner, Nehal Patel, secured funding and paid around £800,000 for the business.
She now has ambitious plans to completely refurbish Astley Grange and acquire further properties to build a portfolio of care homes that meet the highest standards of the QCC.

The Polish Consulate estimates that there are 30,000 Polish people working in the Greater Manchester area.
While figures from the British Polish Chamber of Commerce reveal around 3,000 people from Poland are currently running their own business.
Managing Director Bernard Verby said the firm is primarily targeting companies in the construction and property development sectors many of which are fast-growing and entrepreneurial businesses.
Bennett Verby's Polish division is headed by Senior Accountants Adriana Wyrzykowska and Weronika Nycz who are members of the Polish Networking Club in Manchester. The team also includes three Polish speaking bookkeepers.
The team regularly attend events at the British Polish Chamber of Commerce and Polish Business Link which provide help and advice to Polish entrepreneurs.
Bernard said: " the past few years we have seen a significant rise in the number of new businesses set up by Polish entrepreneurs in the region."
"Many of these are in the construction and property development sectors. More often than not, these companies have been set up by an individual who was given an initial contract and needed a couple of workers to help fulfil that contract. "Our team has a wealth of experience advising owner-managed business and this combined with their Polish language skills and in-depth cultural knowledge means they are ideally placed to advise this rapidly growing sector in the North West business community."
BENNETT VERBY BEEFS UP APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME WITH SIX NEW RECRUITS
Fast growing accountants Bennett Verby has expanded its apprenticeship scheme in a move to help young people get a foothold on the career ladder without racking up huge university fees.
The Stockport-based group has taken on three apprentices in its 2013 intake and is looking to recruit three more.
Bennett Verby has a long history of trainee programmes dating back to the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) in the 1980s. A large number of staff joined on apprenticeship programmes and have gone on to become managers and even directors.
Former apprentice, Neil Jones, was last month promoted to a board director. After joining on an apprenticeship scheme as an accounts trainee, Bennett Verby supported him through his Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) qualifications and he quickly moved up the ranks to become a manager.
Looking to following in the footsteps of Neil is 19-year-old Lee Wilks. After completing A Levels at Xaverian College, Lee decided he didn’t want to go to university because of the potential debt and no guarantee of getting a job at the end.
He joined Bennett Verby instead and attends college one day a fortnight to study for his Association of Accounting Technician (AAT) qualification which should take him about four years. He then wants to study for his ACCA to become a chartered accountant.
Lee says: "This was 100 per cent the right choice for me and is really enjoyable."
Bennett Verby has also taken on another apprentice who is studying for the AAT certification with the hope of becoming a chartered accountant. The third apprentice left school after GCSEs and is working towards an NVQ in Business Administration.
Bennett Verby, Chief Executive Bernard Verby, said: "It has always been a strong belief and commitment of the business to help and support young people within our community".
"A good number of staff who have joined these apprenticeship programmes have moved through the ranks, become chartered accountants and most recently joined the board of directors".
"The introduction of tuition fees has meant that university is not an option for everyone but this shouldn’t mean that young people can’t pursue their chosen career".
"At Bennett Verby we believe that everyone should be given a chance".
BENNETT VERBY APPOINTS TWO DIRECTORS TO THE BOARD
ACCOUNTANTS Bennett Verby has promoted two directors to its board as equity shareholders as part of its ambitious growth plans.
The promotion of Neil Jones and Peter Gibbons brings the total number of board directors at Stockport-based group to eleven. Chief Executive Bernard Verby says he intends to appoint further directors in the coming months.
Bernard says the promotions form part of the firm's long term strategy to bring younger members onto the board in order to take the business to the next level.
He says: "We are implementing a very substantial and aggressive growth plan to expand the business over the next five years which should take us to double the size. This is only the first round of promotions to the board and we plan to have further additions over the next 12 months."
Peter joined the firm 20 years ago as a semi-senior accountant. Within five years he became a manager and now runs the small business and start-ups department. Many of his original clients are still with him and some have seen their turnover grow to more than £30m.
Neil joined aged 16 in 1999 on a Modern Apprenticeship as an accounts trainee. The business invested in his training and development and supported him through CAT and ACCA qualifications. He became a manager eight years ago.
Bernard added: "Neil and Peter have been awarded promotions not only due to their length of service but recognition for their hard work and excellent client service
"We are committed to promoting from within to recognise the hard work and commitment achieved by members of our team."
Bennett Verby launches international division
Accountants Bennett Verby has launched an international division to help the growing number of clients looking to tap into new markets abroad.
Stockport-based Bennett Verby, which is currently helping around 50 North West companies with their international ambitions, decided to launch a specific division after demand for help and advice on expansion abroad had grown significantly.
Bennett Verby has also joined 2020 International – a network of global accountants who share knowledge and expertise. Bernard says membership of the network helps the firm ensure clients get the best local advice on taxes, customs and laws in foreign regions.
Managing partner Bernard Verby said the firm had been helping businesses expand internationally for 20 years but growing demand, particularly in the manufacturing sector, has prompted it to launch a specific division to focus on clients' needs.
Bernard said: "The region's manufacturing industry is performing extremely well and the UK is internationally renowned for its technical expertise and quality. Many manufacturers are seeing demand for their products and machines soaring across global markets.
"One of our clients recently received an order from the States that will double turnover."
The firm offers the complete range of advice to help companies achieve success on the global stage from raising funding and identify new markets to local tax advice.
Bernard said: "We have helped clients with both tax and commercial advice and also deciding which locations to be based. For example, if you want to expand in America you really need a permanent base over there with local employees.
"When preparing your business plan you need to know how local businesses work and what the costs are in those regions. In the States, for example, you have to pay for staff health insurance and this can be as much as the actual salary costs. Also each state has its own local taxes so it can be more efficient to operate in certain areas."
Bernard added: "We offer a true commercial hand holding service so our clients don't feel like they are going into the unknown alone."
Bennett Verby launches App for busy entrepreneurs on the move
Forward thinking accountants Bennett Verby has launched an innovative FREE App designed to help business people save valuable time and manage their tax affairs while on the move.

Features include an expenses calculator and business mileage tracker which uses inbuilt GPS to track distances and store them on the phone until needed.
The App has a number of tax tables and its tax calculators include Corporation Tax, Stamp Duty, Income Tax and Capital Gains. There are also plenty of tax savings ideas.
Chief Executive Officer Bernard Verby said: "We realise that the world has changed with around 80 per cent of people accessing online information via their mobile device. We have listened to our clients who have asked us to provide an App which will enable them to access valuable information at a time that suits them instead of when they are in front of their computer in the office."
The App is just one of a number of initiatives which form part of Bennett Verby's commitment to providing clients with the highest levels of help and advice and to support the growth of businesses.
The App, which was developed by Crosby Associates in Liverpool, is available to download free of charge from iTunes and Google Play, for further information contact Bennett Verby Ltd on 0161 476 9000.
