Bernard S Verby

Bernard S Verby (FCCA)

Chief Executive Officer

Bernard trained and qualified as an accountant in Manchester and worked for a number of leading national practices in their corporate finance and management consultancy departments before establishing Bennett Verby in 1991.

As CEO of the business, Bernard leads the strategic development as well as retaining a small portfolio of clients who he helps.

Bernard is keen to ensure a culture of absolute customer focus is created and maintained within the group and has introduced several additional business services to ensure a complete business solution is on offer.

In conjunction with his fellow directors, they have grown Bennett Verby both organically and through acquisition to be a leading firm of accountants in the North West.

Bernard is involved with a number of national and international business associations as well as well as working with a number of charities.

Outside of work, Bernard lives with his wife and daughters and he is involved with his daughters school's PTA. Bernard is a keen cyclist, a Manchester United supporter and enjoys restoring classic cars.

Steven L Rhodes

Senior Director

Steven is a senior director with Bennett Verby.

Steven started his career with a small independent firm of accountants prior to moving to an international firm Ernst & Young where he qualified as a chartered accountant in 1984.

Steven always had ambitions to run his own practice and eventually in 1990 he set up Rhodes Walsh & Co with two colleagues.

Following expansion and growth of the two offices within Rhodes Walsh the Stafford office was eventually sold to a national firm of accountants and the Hazel Grove office with Steven Rhodes and John Sutcliffe as partners was merged with Bernard Verby in 1999.

Since 1990 Steven has been a senior director and assisted in the significant growth and expansion of the size and service that the practice now has to offer.

Steven continues to offer a personal service to all types and sizes of clients and by being the staff partner has been able to offer his experience and advice to the employees who have worked and continue to work for Bennett Verby.

Steven lives in Glossop with his wife Sharon and has three grown up children.

He has a keen interest in all sports and although no longer plays football and squash still spends a lot of time watching most sports whenever possible.

John Sutcliffe

John Sutcliffe (FCA, FCCA)

Business Advice & Audit Director

John has devoted much of his career to helping small ambitious Companies to achieve and surpass their growth objectives. Once he had trained and qualified within the Manchester office of Jolliffe Cork & Company he moved to the audit department of PKF before heading up their Small Business Services department. It was here he developed his passion for business and represented Manchester in the National Medical Advisors Committee.

In 1990 John joined forces with Steven Rhodes and Ian Walsh to set up Rhodes Walsh & Co before both John and Steven merged in with Bennett Verby & Co in 1999 to create Bennett Verby Ltd in its current form. John brings a wealth of experience and expertise to a diverse client base.

John is married with 3 children who keep him pretty busy. He does however find time to watch Manchester United as he is a season ticket holder and likes to have the occasional round of golf. His musical passion lies with a love of Otis Redding.

Nick Lowe

Nick Lowe (BSc, CTA)

Tax Director

Nick qualified with a BSc in mathematics at Sheffield University and began his earlier tax training with an accountancy practice in Oxford obtaining the ATII (CTA). He joined Rhodes Walsh & Company in 1990 as tax manager and became senior tax director in the newly merged Bennett Verby in 1999.

Nick's has a fulfilling and diverse role at Bennett Verby. The many changes in rules and regulations that come from HMRC provide a challenge and he enjoys providing clients with pro-active tax planning for their business and personal finances.

Nick's clients cover a range of business sectors, including manufacturing, media and events, professional services, property development and rentals. His clients are mainly corporate, some with large multi-million pound turnovers, directors or trusts. He has extensive experience of company restructure and re-organisations, R&D and Capital Allowances claims.

A keen walker, Nick can often be found walking up the fells of the Lake District with his wife. His interests also include travel and competitive chess, playing for Altrincham and Hale Chess Club in both the Manchester and Stockport Chess Leagues.

Ian Buckley

Ian Buckley (FCCA)

Business Advice & Audit Director

Ian qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1997 after completing his training with Charles Frieze & Co (now Howarth Clarke Whitehill). He joined Charles Frieze & Co in 1987 as a junior and worked his way up in the firm to be manager at the time of his departure in February 2000.

He joined Bennett Verby in February 2000 as an audit manager and subsequently became an equity partner in 2004. Ian works to meeting his client's needs and ensuring that their objectives are met and adopts a hand on approach if so required by the client.

He is also a member of The BNI, Pyramid Chapter (a networking business club which meets every week)

Ian is married with two children. He enjoys travel and sport and in his spare time he coaches his son's football team.

Vincent Simmons

Vincent Simmons (FIPA, FABRP)

Corporate Recovery Partner

Vincent trained and qualified within an International accountancy practice as well as gaining valuable experience within smaller independent firms. It was this wide and varied experience within both a "Big 4" firm and independent practices, which provided the perfect combination of both knowledge and experience as he established Bennett Verby's Corporate Recovery & Insolvency, practice in February 2001.

With over 30 years' experience, Vincent has built an enviable reputation for dealing with difficult situations with a resolution attitude delivered with both efficiency and empathy.

Vincent has acted as office holder for businesses within all industry sectors developing a specific expertise in retail, heavy engineering and construction. In addition, he has handled high profile cases such as investigating the actions of directors of a Company on behalf of the Motion Picture Association.

He is a fellow of both the Insolvency Practitioners' Association (IPA) and the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3).

Vincent is married with 2 sons and is an avid sports fan. He has a love of travel and lived in Canada for a number of years. His musical taste is also more stateside as his favoured genre is Country Music.

Neil Jones

Neil Jones (FCCA)

Director

Neil began his career at Bennett Verby in 1999 when he joined us on a Modern Apprenticeship as an accounts trainee. Neil completed his training and qualified as a chartered accountant in 2008. This was followed shortly by a promotion to Accounts and Audit Manager and subsequently in October 2013 Neil became the latest Director and Shareholder of the company.

Neil is passionate about business and is a member of the Stockport County Business Club, which meets every Thursday morning at Edgeley Park.

Having gained a vast experience of accounts Neil is able to advise both small and large businesses alike and he can tailor his approach to suit the needs of the client. Neil is also able to support businesses with financial management, involving cash flow, business plans, projections and management information.

Experienced and pragmatic, Neil is always focused on his clients and their business goals.

Neil is married with two children. He is a keen footballer and regularly plays for a local 5-A-Side team. He is a keen Manchester United supporter.

Peter Gibbons

Peter joined Bennett Verby 20 years ago as a Semi-Senior Accountant. Within five years he was promoted to Manager of the small business and start-up department. Peter's approachable manner and technical knowledge have provided these businesses with valuable support and in turn they have seen huge growth. From sole traders working at home, some now boast turnovers in excess £30 million.

Peter shares the company ethos of absolute client focus. Empathy and personal service coupled with efficiency and experience enable Peter and his team to provide a valuable and enviable service to our clients.

A keen fan of a diverse range of sports and a lifelong supporter of Manchester United means that Peter is often found at the United ground supporting his favourite team.
